In the last 2.5 years before graduating from high school, Jonathan Droste attended a Montessori school, where he gained formative personal experiences. In his presentation, he shares these impressions and draws a direct comparison with the traditional school system. He highlights how Montessori principles have promoted his critical thinking, presentation, and collaboration skills and why these differences can be crucial for the development of young people. The presentation invites us to reflect on the learning paths and personal development of the next generation and shows the potential that alternative educational paths can open up.

E-car: Are you sure? | PLZ8 (CH) | PLZ79

The presentation is based on 10 years of experience using two electric cars, a Chevrolet Volt and a Tesla X. The lecture introduces the topic in an entertaining way. The focus is on understanding the differences between a gasoline-powered and an electric car, and how these are very closely intertwined with usage: driving, charging & range.
Only if you know and internalize the differences, and only if the special characteristics of an e-car are in line with its use, will you be happy with an e-car. The lecture does not pursue any missionary goals and is not aimed at CO₂ balance or similar. It provides practical experience as well as the necessary basic knowledge and understanding of use and practicability and offers entertainment.

Gerald Hahn (RC Thalwil) holds a degree in business administration from the University of Göttingen in 1996 and has worked in the insurance industry ever since, most recently as CFO Switzerland for a well-known insurer. After working in Cologne, London, Paris and Munich, he lives with his family in Rüschlikon on Lake Zurich. He can look back on 10 years of experience in e-mobility. When he bought his second car, the choice of an electric vehicle was clear from the outset.

Microplastics in the body – cause of cancer, heart attacks and dementia?

Our planet is now contaminated with plastic, microplastics and nanoplastics everywhere. All organisms, including humans, absorb these particles through food, air or skin. Over the last 5 years, worrying studies have been published on the health risks of these foreign bodies. These range from arteriosclerosis and the risk of heart attacks and strokes to cell damage and the development of cancer, inflammatory plaques in the brain and the development of dementia. Causes, dangers and possible solutions are presented and discussed.

Dr. Ralf Thiel (RC Wiesbaden-Rheingau) is a medical doctor, sustainability officer and board member of the Rotarian initiative of EndPlasticSoup in Germany. For almost 10 years, he has been working on the plastic pollution of the planet and its effects on the biosphere, including the medical consequences for humans. Under his leadership, one of RI’s largest environmental projects, the Global Grant Danube/Drina, was initiated and launched. He has already given more than 50 lectures at Rotary.
