His latest books: “Understanding the Energy Transition” (Springer, 2018), “Fact-Checking Sustainability” (Springer, 2021) and “Our Future Will Be Good (Most Likely)” (Springer, 2026).

Service Above Self in the operating theatre – Medical mission in Ghana as a Rotarian and urologist working for ‘Doctors for Africa’

The association “Doctors for Africa”, founded in 2007 by a Rotarian, supports eight hospitals in remote rural areas of Ghana and The Gambia. Without this humanitarian aid, many people would have no access to urological care. The speaker has been an active member for many years and has already travelled “in the footsteps of Albert Schweitzer” on several occasions in Africa and the Middle East. The talk describes everyday medical life in the operating theatre, on the ward and in the outpatient clinic, amidst limited resources, improvisation, personal responsibility and the dedication of local teams. In addition to the surgical challenges, the talk also addresses cultural differences, patients’ fates, hygiene, training, sustainability, organisation, and the question of what modern medicine really needs.

Dr Ralf Thiel (RC Wiesbaden-Rheingau) has been a Rotarian since 2005. He recently retired from his post as Head of Urology and currently works as a general practitioner and senior consultant at a urology clinic in Wiesbaden. For many years, he has been active abroad as a surgeon on humanitarian missions, for example in Syria, Lebanon and, in particular, Ghana in West Africa.

Marlow D. Guttmann (Rotaract Hamburg International) is a speaker, HR and organizational development consultant at the Evangelische Stiftung Alsterdorf, an author, lecturer, and mentor. A Year That Changes Lives—and a Community That Endures: Rotary Youth Exchange & Rotex in District 1820

Every year, Rotary enables young people worldwide to spend a school year abroad, immersed in new cultures, languages, and unforgettable encounters. In her presentation, an active Rotex participant offers an authentic insight into the Youth Exchange program in District 1820: from the programs themselves to the significance of Rotex, and on to our work and our team. Depending on the club’s interests, she will focus on the Youth Exchange itself, the work of Rotex, or both. She is always open to questions and further discussion afterward. A presentation for anyone who wants to understand how the Youth Exchange brings about lasting change in the lives of young people and their communities.

In her talk, Fiona Stumm explores a moment that many people are familiar with but rarely notice: the hesitation before speaking. Drawing on personal experiences, she shows how seemingly minor situations give rise to a recurring pattern that prevents people from voicing their thoughts. This is not about volume or provocation, but rather the question of why we hold ourselves back—often out of fear of the impact and judgment. The talk invites us to become more aware of these moments and to reflect anew on our own approach to silence and courage.
