The gray rhinoceros and the low interest rate | PLZ61

Quantifying the effects of the low-interest phase on the expectations of the ”average consumer“ with regard to retirement provision”

The study begins with an analysis of the most important sources of old-age provision in Germany, particularly with regard to their recent and future development. Against this background, a simple model is used to illustrate the impact of a change in the key parameters on the expected costs of private pension provision for an “example person” from 1998 to the present day. Based on this, a comparison is made with the world’s largest currency areas. Finally, after a discussion of the results, findings are derived that could be relevant for the professional and political discussion.
