As early as 1903, the author H. G. Wells wrote: “Statistical thinking will one day be as important for the responsible citizen as the ability to read and write.” He was proved right. Why is a critical attitude towards statistics more important today than ever before? Yes, it belongs to critical citizens in a democratic state that is committed to political transparency. However, we are provided with false information on a daily basis, which is not necessarily malicious, but rather a misinterpretation of statistical data. In 2015, for example, we were shocked by the news that regular consumption of sausage and meat increased the risk of bowel cancer by 18%. Current examples are used to demonstrate and explain such misinterpretations.zu schreiben.”
