Women on the run | PLZ54 (CH)

A situation report from Greece

Refugee women and mothers are exposed to high risks and gender-specific violence. Many are traumatized. In order to meet the specific needs of refugee women, Rot. Raquel Herzog founded the aid organization SAO Association in 2016 after a lengthy volunteer assignment as a sea rescuer on the Greek island of Lesbos. SAO Association runs two day centers in Greece for refugee women, mothers and their infants – the Bashira Centre on Lesbos and the Amina Centre in Athens. Both centers specialize in professional psychosocial support and integration services. SAO was awarded the Swiss Red Cross Prize in 2023.

Raquel Herzog (RC Üetliberg) traveled to Lesbos in 2015 to volunteer in the emergency care of boat refugees. She was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow in 2016 for her 8-month assignment.
The 1948 Convention on Human Rights is the guiding principle of the organization she founded, the SAO Association for Women on the Move. She is convinced that the world will only change if each of us makes a small contribution to a greater whole.
