Democracy – an endangered species? | PLZ44 | PLZ45

Our democracy is tiring – how we can reinvigorate it in the age of globalization and digitalization.

Right-wing populists want a “strong leader”, radical climate activists consider parliamentary democracy unsuitable for saving the planet, and political engagement and voter turnout are declining dramatically in the middle of society.
Democracy is more than just voting. Democracy is the prevention of the concentration of power through the separation of powers, human rights and public discourse. Democracy must be upgraded for the 21st century – with new instruments that complement parliamentary democracy in a meaningful way.
“Democracies rarely die because of the strength of their opponents, but often because of the weakness of their friends. Democracy must be lived, developed and courageously defended, otherwise we will leave it to our enemies.“
